The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has approved €5.4m for the Office of Public Works to progress the next phase of redeveloping Conradh na Gaeilge's headquarters at 6 Harcourt Street, Dublin.
Under the National Development Plan 2021–2030, the historic Harcourt Street building is being transformed into a central Irish language and cultural hub. The project will provide a dynamic heritage experience for visitors and tourists and create office space for organisations including Conradh na Gaeilge, Oireachtas na Gaeilge and Raidió Rí-Rá.
The initiative is one of three major Gaeltacht capital projects advancing within the Department, alongside the €35m redevelopment of the Inis Oírr pier and the construction of a multi-million-euro Education and Youth Centre in Indreabhán, Co Galway.
The redevelopment is being delivered in stages. This phase mainly covers ground works to the rear of the building, with a modern extension planned as part of the full scheme. An earlier €3.2m allocation, approved in February 2025 for initial stages, has now been completed.
On a site visit to Harcourt Street, Minister Dara Calleary said: "I am very proud to see the progress which has been made so far in the redevelopment of Number 6 Harcourt Street. This project involves the conservation of a building of national historical import, and it is essential that the future of that building is ensured for the Irish language community into the future.
"Of course, this is a significant Government investment, as we fulfil the commitments laid out in the National Development Plan 2021-2030.
"With the restoration works completed on the project to date, the integrity of the current historical building has been maintained, as the structure is brought up to a modern standard.
"Today's funding will ensure that the vital works can be completed, in order to bring the building up to the highest standards, in preparation for the next stages in the development.
"I wish all the stakeholders every success as they work on this stage of the redevelopment.
"This investment ensures that the important work undertaken by Conradh na Gaeilge has a bright future as they strengthen the Irish language in Dublin and across the country."
The Government says the project aligns with commitments in the Programme for Government: Our Shared Future, the National Development Plan 2021–2030, Project Ireland 2040 and the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010–2030. The funding is drawn from the Capital Programme of the Irish Language Support Schemes, which supports Irish language organisations located outside the Gaeltacht.
