ESB Networks has marked a key milestone at Limerick's Dock Road 38 kV station with the installation of the first of two new 18.75 MVA transformers.
Once fully commissioned, the upgrade will deliver 27.5 MVA of additional capacity, helping to meet rising demand across the city and enabling residential, commercial and industrial development.
The project will provide enough network capacity to serve approximately 7,000 homes and will facilitate the electrification of heating and transport.
Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development, Senior Manager, ESB Networks added: "This investment at the Dock Road 38 kV Station is a key step in supporting Limerick's continued growth, helping to accelerate the capacity needed for new homes, businesses, and future development across this growing region.
"Through targeted strategic interventions ESB Networks is working to ensure the electricity network can keep pace with Limerick's housing needs while also supporting Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future.
"By optimising existing assets, we are also strengthening the network in the near-term for existing customers by preparing it to support low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, all the while keeping Limerick's long-term economic growth in sight."
These works form part of ESB Networks' broader investments under Price Review 6 to reinforce and build out the electricity network nationwide, ensuring it can meet growing demand while supporting Ireland's housing and climate ambitions.
