Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, together with Ministers of State Seán Canney and Jerry Buttimer, has announced €40 million in additional Department of Transport funding to repair regional and local roads damaged by Storm Chandra earlier this year.
A review carried out in March 2026 identified approximately 130 roads needing complete reconstruction and over 440 with significant damage, while several bridge structures were made impassable. The new allocation is intended to enable the hardest-hit local authorities to undertake essential restoration works across their regional and local networks.
Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, said: "I am pleased to announce the provision of €40 million in exceptional additional funding to facilitate the repair of our regional and local roads after the impact of Storm Chandra. Extreme weather events leave significant damage in their wake and Government is committed to supporting our local authorities to ensure the condition of our road network is maintained."
Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney, said: "The protection and maintenance of our regional and local roads is vital for the safety of all road users, as well as supporting the people and businesses who rely on our road network.The funding provided today will enable our local authorities to carry out the much-needed remediation of storm damage."
Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer, added: "The funding made available today will ensure that priority work can be undertaken by local authorities to restore our regional and local roads, keeping our rural communities and businesses connected and protected."
The Department has set out the following allocations: Carlow €2.79m; Kilkenny €3.46m; Laois €1.00m; Louth €1.00m; Waterford €5.53m; Wexford €13.49m; Wicklow €10.72m; Monaghan €0.90m; and Tipperary €1.11m, bringing the total to €40.00m.
Separately, in February 2026, €718 million was allocated to eligible local authorities under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme to maintain and improve approximately 5,130km of regional and local roads. This funding also supports projects under the National Development Plan and programmes covering road safety, drainage, climate adaptation and community improvement.
