The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has released its Q2 2026 social housing statistics, reporting a record first-half delivery of new-build social homes and a strengthening pipeline.
Between January and June 2026, 2,731 new-build social homes were completed, a 51% rise on the 1,804 delivered in the same period of 2025. This marks the highest first-half total on record. While the majority of social housing completions by local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies typically occur in the second half of the year, the mid-year figures point to strong overall output in 2026.
In Q2 alone, 2,008 new-build homes were delivered, 38% above the total for Q2 2025. Including leasing and acquisitions, as well as the Housing Assistance Payment (1,595) and the Rental Accommodation Scheme (591), a total of 4,320 housing supports were provided in Q2 2026.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD said: "Record first-half delivery of new-build social homes is a positive milestone and indicates that this year we will exceed the record numbers of social homes delivered last year – when over 9,000 social homes were built, the highest number in the history of the state.
"However, we are not complacent. We need to drive on, get more shovels in the ground and get more keys into people's hands.
"Behind every home delivered is an individual or family gaining the security, stability and opportunity that comes with having a place to call home.
"My focus, and the focus of this Government, is on continuing to increase delivery and making a real difference in communities across the country and this is what we intend to do."
The latest Construction Status Report shows 22,206 social homes at various stages of design and construction at the end of June 2026. Of these, 9,533 were onsite, with a further 12,673 at design and tender stage. In Q2 alone, 59 new construction schemes were added to the pipeline.
Minister Browne said: "The strength of our social housing pipeline gives confidence that delivery can continue to grow in the years ahead.
"Our focus is now on maintaining momentum at every stage of the delivery process. We want to see more projects progressing, more construction activity on the ground, and ultimately more families benefiting from the security and stability that a social home provides.
"Alongside this, recent reforms to the delivery of turnkey developments will help provide greater clarity, consistency and certainty for all parties involved, supporting more sustainable and predictable pipeline of social housing provision over the longer term."
The Construction Status Report provides scheme-level details on new-build social housing, organised by local authority and listing the individual projects in each programme (excluding LA Part V, CAS Part V and Traveller Accommodation build delivery).
