Bord Gáis Meetings Outline Details Of Natural Gas Construction Programmes

Bord Gáis Networks met with key community and business representatives in Claremorris and Ballina over the past two days to outline specific details of the construction programmes to bring natural gas to the towns. Natural gas is expected in both towns during September 2008.

Representatives from the Claremorris Electoral Area, members from Ballina Town Council, Chambers of Commerce, Gardaí and Emergency Services were invited to attend the information evenings, together with local businesses, developers and architects. The focus of the evenings was to present details on the plans for the natural gas distribution network within the two towns, together with an overview of the pipeline construction methods being used during the project, the communications programme in place to inform the general public, safety issues and traffic management. Representatives from GMC Civil & Mechanical Engineering Ltd., the firm contracted to carry out the construction work on behalf of Bord Gáis Networks, were introduced and addressed a number of queries from the various representatives.

Work on the distribution network has commenced in Claremorris in the areas of Cappagh Road, New Link Road, Dalton Street and Mayfield. Work on the feeder main from Crossmolina to Ballina is well advanced and following advance works carried out in 2007 within the town of Ballina to facilitate resurfacing works, the remainder of the distribution network work is now underway in the areas of Killalla Road, Tone Street, Sligo Road and Crossmolina Road.

It is expected that gas will be available in both towns by September 2008. The schedule for connection of Ballina was revised following a high level of interest expressed by local businesses during canvassing in the town last year. Mark Holohan, National Sales Manager, confirmed the company’s plans stating: "The response from local businesses in Ballina has been very positive and a significant uptake is expected. As Ballina is the next major load in the region after Westport and Castlebar, Bord Gáis is committed to connecting businesses and residents in the town as early as September this year."
