Kildare Council Publishes Sustainable Drainage Systems Guidelines

Construction News Image
Kildare County Council has published its new Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) guidelines which is set to benefit the built and natural environment.

The Council has begun implementing SuDS design in its Parks projects and is committed to integrating this approach into all future projects. This includes retrofitting existing urban areas, neighbourhoods, streets, and public spaces across Kildare. The aim is to enhance flood resilience and elevate the amenity value of these spaces for the community.

SuDS play a vital role in improving flood resilience, adapting to climate change and benefiting both urban and natural environments. Unlike conventional methods relying on rigid structures like pipes and tanks, SuDS offer a more sustainable approach by managing surface water runoff effectively, reducing flooding, and minimising water pollution.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) usenatural techniques to control rainfall, slowing its flow to match greenfield runoff rates. This prevents downstream flooding while enhancing landscapes, biodiversity, and community spaces. Public SuDS features like rainwater gardens, swales, and ponds demonstrate this approach. Additionally, developments can integrate SuDS like green roofs, permeable paving and rainwater harvesting systems.

The preparation of the Guidelines was an action of the newly adopted County Development Plan. The document establishes a strong vision for implementing excellent SuDS in County Kildare through the planning process and for the lifelong maintenance of SuDS landscapes. The Guidance Document seeks to assist project developers in ensuring that the SuDS that are incorporated into developments are designed to the highest possible standards. SuDS need to be carefully considered in the design of their developments all the way from concept design stage through to ensuring that the right maintenance is in place.
