Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Link Road Opens

A new €6m road layout has been officially opened on the Sandyford to Drummartin link.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said the scheme will benefit workers in the Sandyford Business Estate and local commuters.

The road opened two months ahead of schedule and now offers an extra entry/exit route at the business estate.

It is expected to significantly relieve traffic congestion in this area. The road also features Ecocem, a new environmentally-friendly cement created from a by-product of steel production.

Jointly funded from planning levies and Department of Transport road grants, construction of the road commenced in October 2008 and involved a pedestrian underpass for the use of St. Benildus de la Salle School to provide safe access to their playing fields; installation of new footpaths and on-road cycle-ways; new signal controlled junctions; diversion of utilities; extensive landscaping and public lighting.

The project resulted in the creation of approximately 50 full-time jobs during the construction phase, and was delivered within budget at a cost of approximately €6m.

The official opening and naming of the new road by An Cathaoirleach Marie Baker, will take place in late September.
