Almost €400k is to be spent improving a popular cycle path in Co Cork.
Funding has been sanctioned by the Department of Transport to carry out resurfacing works along the Carrigaline to Crosshaven track.
The scheme will combine and widen the existing walkway with the bicycle route.
It is anticipated the scheme will be completed before the end of the year.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said: "The delivery of this new 5.4 kilometres cycleway between Carrigaline and Crosshaven is another important step in delivering a National Cycle Network in Ireland.
"This off-road cycleway will offer those who commute regularly between Carrigaline and Crosshaven a new, healthier and safe way to travel."
The existing Carrigaline to Crosshaven walk was established along the old Carrigaline to Crosshaven railway line.
The stretch was surfaced, completed and officially opened in 2000. Along the walk are picnic areas, seating, railway memorabilia and wildlife viewing points.
"It is now proposed to upgrade, resurface and widen this path to allow for a combined pedestrian walk and cycleway." said a Cork council spokesman.
