Dublin City Council has marked a key milestone in the regeneration of Phase 1 at Cromcastle Court and the Old Coalyard site in Coolock, Dublin 5, with the official start of demolition works.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Daryl Barron officiated at the event, which signals the beginning of on-site activity to prepare for a new housing development under the Council’s citywide housing delivery and regeneration programme. He was joined by local elected representatives, officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Council officials, and members of the project and contractor teams.
Speaking at the event, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daryl Barron, said: "While this marks the beginning of demolition works at Cromcastle Court, it is ultimately about looking forward to the delivery of new homes and a renewed community. This project represents a major investment in the area and will provide high-quality, modern, and sustainable housing for current and future residents. It is a crucial step in strengthening the community and enhancing the local environment. I want to acknowledge the cooperation and patience of residents throughout this process and thank all those involved in bringing this project to this important stage."
The Phase 1 redevelopment will deliver 152 new homes in total, comprising 118 general social housing homes and 34 homes specifically designed for older persons.
A mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes will cater for a range of housing needs and will help residents remain within their community.
Beyond housing, the scheme includes high-quality amenity spaces such as communal courtyards with play areas, a new public open space and a dedicated community facility. Public realm upgrades and new pedestrian routes are planned to enhance connectivity and integrate the development with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Dublin City Council acknowledged the vital contribution of local residents, noting that their cooperation and engagement have been central to the project’s progress.
The project is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Construction of the new homes is expected to follow the demolition phase, with the full development planned for delivery in the coming years.
