Dublin Exhibit Features Jobless Architects

A new exhibition entitled 'Now What?' about the future of architecture in Ireland will open in Dublin's Smithfield Market this weekend.

The exhibition is composed by architects made recently redundant in the recession.

'Now What?' is a voluntary initiative organised by architects over the summer of 2009.

It was composed of 23 workshops, public conversations on issues facing Ireland and design competitions, culminating in this public exhibition.

Highlights of the exhibition include the evening conversation on Monday night, where

Sounding Boxes, Cohesive Construction and Communicative Constructs will present and discuss their work.

On Tuesday a reading group discussion will be held.

The reading is 'Zoom: Google Earth and Global Intimacy' by Vittoria di Palma from Intimate Metropolis which she edited with Diana Periton et al.

Next Saturday a one day design competition for 'the Dublin House'. The competition is taking place in association with Dublin City Council, using an existing DCC site.

The following Monday a conversation will be led by On Hold, the Spirit of Gracious Living and Remaking the suburbs, who will present their work

Staff at the School of Architecture at Richview, University College Dublin conceived and supported the initiative by providing studio space, library and building laboratory facilities over the summer months.

The project is grant-aided by the Department of Environment, which allowed the exhibition to take place.

The exhibition will take place in Unit 14, Block C, Smithfield market, in space donated by Chris Kelly of RedQuartz Developments.

The exhibition will run from 9th-20th October, and is a part of 'Open House' and 'Innovation Week Dublin'.
