EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, has opened a public consultation on the proposed North Wicklow Reinforcement Project, part of its wider 'Powering Up Wicklow' programme to modernise and strengthen key electricity infrastructure in the county and surrounding areas.
With existing infrastructure in Wicklow approaching capacity, the programme aims to maintain a consistent and reliable power supply while helping to make Ireland renewable ready.
The project is intended to reinforce the grid to meet expected growth in demand from new residential and commercial developments, as well as the electrification of heating and transport. It proposes a new 220 kV substation and a new 110 kV substation in the Greystones, Delgany and Kilpedder area, connected by associated cables.
EirGrid said it undertakes extensive studies to determine optimal routes and technologies, taking account of the local landscape, environment and cultural heritage. Following a Multi Criteria Assessment, two potential zones have been identified for the 220 kV substation and one potential zone for the 110 kV substation.
The consultation runs from Tuesday 20 October to Friday 11 December, with public information events scheduled in Greystones and Kilcoole.
