Charlie McConalogue TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy, has welcomed the official opening of the newly completed Lucan Leisure Campus in County Dublin on 20 October 2026, joining South Dublin County Council to mark the occasion.
Backed by €3,809,214 in Government funding from the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, the development features two new pools, including a multiuse pool with a movable floor, alongside a fitness gym, exercise studios, a sports hall, sauna and steam room, changing areas, a crèche and reception.
Speaking at the opening, Minister McConalogue said: "The delivery of this project is a testament to the hard work of the local community, South Dublin County Council, Department officials, and all stakeholders involved. It provides a much-needed sporting opportunity for this area, accessible to people of all ages and abilities, in all weather, all year round. Ireland’s first National Swimming Strategy sets out a vision to provide everyone in our country with an opportunity to swim. The recently opened Lucan Swimming Pool will help fulfil that vision, improving pool access for this region, promoting water safety as well as helping to develop the next generation of Irish swimming talent."
Minister of State Emer Higgins TD said: "I’m delighted this fantastic new facility was delivered here in my own constituency of Dublin Mid West. It has been a really welcome investment in our local area and something that families and communities across Dublin Mid West are benefiting from and will benefit from for years to come. Swimming is a great way for people of all ages and abilities to stay active, look after their wellbeing and enjoy time together. Having high-quality, accessible facilities like this on our doorstep makes a real difference. It’s also great to see such a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. This is an investment not just in a new facility, but in the health, wellbeing and future of our local community."
Capital support for new swimming pools is provided through the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). To date, €297 million has been allocated under LSSIF, including €42.48 million for swimming pool and aquatic infrastructure projects ranging from just under €500,000 to €11.2 million.
