Uisce Éireann has submitted a planning application for a €13 million upgrade of the Castlerea Water Treatment Plant, aiming to deliver a more resilient, future-proofed water supply for homes and businesses across West Roscommon.
Once complete, the enhanced facility will have capacity to serve up to 4,800 additional homes, helping the network meet current and future demand while strengthening the overall reliability of supply.
The scheme involves installing and commissioning a new treatment stream, including a modern chemical dosing system, upgraded filtration and flocculation processes, and a full electrical overhaul. Plans also include new buildings and tanks, alongside improvements to the site's power supply.
Barry Garvin, Regional Water Treatment Planning Manager with Uisce Éireann in the North West, said: "This €13 million investment in Castlerea Water Treatment Plant is a vital step in securing a safe and reliable water supply for the community. We recognise the significant disruption that Boil Water Notices have caused for customers in the past, and this upgrade is designed to address those challenges by significantly improving treatment processes at the plant. It will also increase capacity to support future housing and economic development, while helping to reduce the risk of Boil Water Notices."
Subject to planning approval, construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with substantial completion expected by 2029 and commissioning in 2030.
