Funding has been granted to radically improve one of the main gateways into Derry city centre.
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie said the £420,000 project, which has been developed in partnership with the Roads Service, will significantly enhance the Victoria Road gateway route into the city.
Work will involve the removal of the existing railings; construction of a new stone wall; and upgrades to the street lighting.
Nearby Japanese knotweed will also be treated and trees and shrubs pruned.
Ms Ritchie said the project will make the road safer for both pedestrians and motorists.
"I am confident that this project together with my department’s City Centre Public Scheme, and the new Peace Bridge will play an important role in attracting more visitors to Derry in the years ahead."
Roads Minister Conor Murphy welcomed the DSD's funding commitment.
"The current proposals will not only improve the physical environment, making this approach to the city more attractive, but will also have overall safety benefits to the travelling public," he said.
"The proposed scheme will also enhance and support future proposals currently being developed by my department’s Roads Service to upgrade the roads and footways in this area."
