Ireland's largest breast care unit will be officially opened in Cork later today.

The opening is part of the development of a dedicated cancer care centre at Cork University Hospital.

The unit is the last of eight regional cancer care centres to be opened and will be capable of seeing around 12,000 people every year.

The project also means that, for the first time, all breast care patients in the country will be diagnosed and treated by consultants and medical teams specialising in that area.

The move to centralise breast care services from several hospitals in Cork and Kerry had been met with strong opposition, however medical staff now insist those issues have been dealt with.
