Kildare County Council has appointed Donnelly Civil Engineering to deliver the first phase of Cherry Avenue Park in Kildare Town, marking a key step towards a new public amenity for local residents.
The 17-acre site on Dublin Road previously formed part of the National Stud before the M7 motorway was built. Early works will involve regrading the land to establish levels for proposed features, upgrading the existing entrance to include pedestrian and cycle access, constructing a new car park, and installing circulation paths, seating and landscaping across the park.
The original masterplan for Cherry Avenue Park was produced by M-CO. Murray & Associates Landscape Architects prepared the detailed design for phase one and, alongside Kildare County Council, will oversee the construction. The design team also includes Donnachadh O’Brien & Associates (Civil and Structural Engineer and Project Supervisor Design Process) and Levins Associates (Quantity Surveyors). The initial phase is due to be completed in 2028.
Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Councillor Tim Durkan, said: "The delivery of this park will provide an important amenity for Kildare Town and the surrounding areas. As the park develops, it will also support future recreational provision for the community."
Sonya Kavanagh, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said: "Cherry Avenue Park demonstrates how Kildare County Council is delivering recreational and amenity infrastructure across the county. Parks and open spaces give people important places to exercise and socialise, while also supporting green infrastructure, biodiversity and climate action. We look forward to completing this initial phase with our design partners, Murray & Associates Landscape Architects, and Donnelly Civil Engineering."
