Around 2500 jobs will be lost if plans to build an incinerator in Dublin go ahead, the Irish Waste Management Association (IWMA) has claimed.
According to a report in the Irish Times, the IMWA warned an Oireachtas environment committee about the ramifications of the construction of the Poolbeg facility.
The association said the 600,000-tonne capacity incinerator would "wipe out alternatives" to incineration and claims jobs within the waste industry, adding that it would "suck up" waste that private operators were recycling at the moment.
"More than 1,000 jobs will be lost directly and immediately once the tap is turned off to alternatives. We’re probably talking about 2,500 people in direct and indirect jobs being laid off," commented IWMA spokesman Brendan Keane.
