A Newry-based construction company has picked up a major quality award for its recent environmental improvement scheme in Armagh.

SIAC Construction was granted the 'very good' standard of the CEEQUAL award for the scheme, which was completed within budget and six months ahead of schedule.

The project has "significantly improved" public access and community space in the city centre with features including granite and limestone paving, street lighting, road re-surfacing, street furniture and public art, throughout a total of 11 streets.

"We are particularly delighted that the award recognises our commitment to protection and consideration of the environment on all of our schemes," said Kieran Doyle of SIAC.

"All schemes for modern day living require long-term thinking and must take account of the needs of those who will use the space and indeed how they will use it.

"To be viable, town centres not only require good retail and leisure mixes but they must also be attractive places to be. I think this award acknowledges the fact that we put a lot of thought into the delivery aspects of the schemes which we undertake."

The CEEQUAL award recognises the attainment of environmental excellence in civil engineering projects.
