The old Letterkenny Leisure Centre is being levelled in the coming weeks.
The former swimming pool and basketball court which has been unused since it closed down in 2007 is being demolished to make way for a new court facility.
The site was sold to the Courts Service for €3m with the money due to go towards the new €18m sports complex that is being constructed at Sallaghrane.
The Courts Service is to undertake a detailed appraisal before a proposed Public Private Partnership contract is arranged to build the new court.
The Department of Justice is seeking approval to proceed to the procurement stage but a spokeman admitted that "the general budgetary situation may impact on the decision" to proceed with the major construction contract.
