Construction jobs are in doubt as plans to build a £7.6m sports centre at the University of Ulster's Coleraine campus look likely to be scrapped due to government cuts, according to a lecturer's union.

The University and College Union (UCU) claims the centre is the most likely casualty of the university's need to save £4.5m, the BBC reports.

According to Lyn Fawcett, the UCU's Chairman at the University of Ulster, the government's cuts to funding has left them with no alternative.

"In the current economic situation, there is a very quick knee jerk reaction by government to cut funding," said Mr Fawcett.

Work is scheduled to begin on the sports centre this year, with completion slated for 2011.
