Ulster Unionist MLA Fred Cobain has welcomed the news that a public enquiry is going to be held into an extension to Belfast City Airport's runway.

Commenting on the announcement by NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots, Mr Cobain said: "This is a hugely positive step for the local residents many of whom will be delighted that this issue will now be under public consultation.

"Residents have been campaigning on this issue for years and have lobbied the various political parties and departments involved in the decision.

"My Party Leader Sir Reg Empey has been particularly vocal on the issue - and as a representative for the area he believed that the extension proposals had been put forward with a complete disregard for those residents living near by."

Mr Cobain continued: "I would stress that I recognise that the airport is an excellent local employer and I am more then aware of its importance to business and to tourism - but we also need to think of the impact it has on those who live near by. This has been going on for over seven years - and a public enquiry would seem the only reasonable way to ensure that the needs of all involved in this issue are addressed."
