Build Banbridge School Now: SDLP

A Co Down politician has called for action over a promised school project.

Commenting on delays in the building of a new school for St Patrick's College in Banbridge, Upper Bann SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly said: "There are enough building contractors in Upper Bann who would willingly tender for schools contracts, particularly in the current economic climate, providing a welcome stimulus to the construction industry in the area."

She has urged the NI Education Minister Caitriona Ruane to act: "Parents, pupils, teachers were promised a new build for St Patrick's years ago but the Education Minister has failed to deliver on this commitment.

"The school is in a poor state of repair and new facilities are urgently required for the wellbeing of both staff and children."

Ms Kelly, who is contesting the Upper Bann Westminster seat today, said the Banbridge community had already waited too long for this new building to begin.

She continued: "St Patrick's is one of seven schools in Upper Bann which have had their new buildings halted and as a consequence many pupils will not benefit from the first class facilities which a new school building provides, as they will have left school before projects are brought to fruition.

"I have written to the Education Minister explaining the deteriorating condition of St Patrick's College and have queried why there has been such a prolonged delay in its development."
