A leading climatologist has urged Clare County Council to display extra care when deciding on planning applications for one-off homes in the Burren region of the area.
Citing the advent of climate change, Prof John Sweeney of NUI Maynooth said winters in the Burren would be wetter, resulting in water tables being higher, according to a report in the Irish Times.
During a lecture on the impact of climate change, Prof Sweeney said the council "will have to be even more careful in granting planning permission to septic-tank-based housing," adding that vulnerable ground waters "need to be protected".
