The port town of Larne is set for an image overhaul in the coming years, according to a new town masterplan, just revealed.

The Minister for Social Development, Alex Attwood, officially launched the plan in Larne, unveiling an action plan of some 30 proposals which could take place over the next 15 years.

The plan focuses on three main areas and with Larne known as the Gateway to the Glens, it is aiming to attract tourists back into the town centre

The three areas in question are the town core, the Waterfront area - next to Larne Lagoon - and Riverdale - at the head of the town.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Attwood said: "Larne is a gateway to the Antrim Coast.

"The masterplan vision shows how Larne can become a more vibrant and prosperous town."

It includes plans for community gardens and greater event space, along with a modern shopping complex, a new hotel and opening up greater links with the waterfront.

The Mayor of Larne, Councillor Bobby McKee, added: "We are extremely pleased to have a masterplan for our town centre."

Substantial work for the construction sector is expected to floe from the plan, once agreed and funded.
