Problems for a proposed Glengormley store re-development by the UK's top supermarket have this week been further compounded by a fresh set-back.
Newtownabbey is proving doubly problematic for Tesco as Stormont Environment Minister Edwin Poots is now poised to refuse planning permission for a new supermarket on the edge of nearby Ballyclare.
The news comes after Tesco's planned demolition and rebuilding of the aged Northcott Shopping Centre in Glengormley - supposed to be finished by Christmas 2012 - was hit by a delay of between 18 months and two years.
That set-back was played down by the company, but news that Minister Poots has denied Tesco's bid for a superstore, retail units and petrol station on the former FG Wilson site at Hillhead Road, Ballyclare was announced publicly to MLAs in the Assembly.
He cited opposition from town centre traders and some councillors who feared it would damage existing businesses and planners recommended it be refused.
