The Co Antrim builder, Farrans, has been awarded the long-awaited Bangor Pool Project, which is valued at £30 million.
It will include Northern Ireland's first 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The publicly funded project, which is being promoted by North Down Borough Council, has secured £15 million of finance from the Northern Ireland Executive.
The pool will be built as part of a new leisure complex at Valentine Playing Fields in Bangor and work will commence at the end of August.
It will not however be ready in time to be used for team training in conjunction with the 2012 London Olympics, as originally planned.
