A Co Down business offered a plea and was given a conditional discharge for 12 months plus £25 court costs at Newry Magistrates' Court.
Blockbusters Environmental Services Ltd, Unit 1, Block D, Win Business Park, Newry, was given a conditional discharge for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
On 1 May 2009, Water Quality Inspectors, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (formerly the Environment and Heritage Service), inspected the Newry Canal at Canal Quay and observed what appeared to be black oil in the waterway.
The source of the polluting discharge was traced to the premises of Blockbusters Environmental Services Ltd at Win Business Park.
Samples taken at the time of the incident suggests that the contamination present was a heavy mineral oil.
