A Dundalk housing project, Carlinn Hall, looks set for partial demolition just three years after the eco-friendly houses on the Mullaharlin Road were launched.

With 234 units planned for it, it was Ireland's largest ever-sustainable energy development featuring the best of smart technology but despite high-profile promotion it never took off.

Currently, only a handful of houses are being occupied, and much of the estate remains either unfinished or half-finished and weeds and grass grow high and wild.

There is now the possibility of part of the development being torn down after a Sinn Fein Councillor Tomas Sharkey told the Dundalk Democrat newspaper that he has called for the county council inspectors to look into the estate, which has been left unfinished.

The inspectors are due to investigate Carlinn Hall in the coming weeks and depending on their findings they do have the power to call for the demolition of any unsafe structures.
