Causeway Coastal Route 'Key Link': Wilson

An improvement scheme for tourism on the shores of Co Antrim has been described by the local MP as a key stop-off point to view the scenery and wildlife at Belfast Lough.

The Stormont Finance Minister Sammy Wilson visited the site at Jordanstown Loughshore Park and said it is destined to be part of one of Northern Ireland's important tourism developments.

Sammy Wilson - who is also the local DUP MP - met with Eugene McKennan, Managing Partner in GEDA Construction and Sean McGivern, Senior Architect in McGurk Chartered Architects during his visit to the construction site.

He said the work currently underway at Jordanstown Loughshore Park is one of the 'Signature projects' identified by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board as being of regional significance in terms of becoming a world class tourist attraction - with work at the site is due for completion at the end of March 2011.

Following the visit Sammy Wilson said: "This is an exciting new development and will enhance the visitor's experience at the start of their journey, exploring the many breathtaking views along the Causeway Coastal Route."

He noted that the £1.34m investment would provide excellent facilities for both local and overseas visitors including an upgraded and expanded caravan park, replacement of existing amenities and a key stop off point to view the scenery and wildlife at Belfast Lough.

Sammy Wilson said: "I have repeatedly referred to the economic downturn, how it has had a severe affect on the construction industry in Northern Ireland and how the industry must innovate to compete in today's difficult trading climate.

"It is heartening to see smaller local companies winning projects such as this development, working in partnership with the wider public sector and generating income for local people," he said, noting that the caravan park is scheduled to open in April 2011 in time for the beginning of the main tourist season.
