New Chapter Opens For Belfast Landmark

Stonework repairs to the façade of one of Belfast's best-known and most historic buildings - the Central Library - have been officially completed.

And while its unwise to 'judge a book by it's cover', the Stormont Minister responsible for Libraries, the DUP's North Belfast MLA, Nelson McCausland is in no doubt of the success of the refurbishment of the iconic building's exterior.

The repair work was carried out to address weather damage to the listed building's stonework and roof.

The work, which was commissioned by Libraries NI and carried out by Patton Construction, concluded in February 2011 with Minister McCausland undertaking a tour of the project.

"I welcome the opportunity to celebrate the completion of the stonework repairs at Belfast Central Library.

"Stormont committed approximately £940,000 to the restoration work, in recognition of the significant role that the Library plays in the cultural life of Northern Ireland," he said.

"Given the current economic climate and the impending Westminster budget cuts, it is not surprising that during the recent budget consultation I received approximately 3,500 messages from people explaining why their library is valuable and should be defended.

"People are and always will be passionate about their libraries," he said.

"Hundreds of thousands of visitors pass through the doors of Belfast Central library every year. Not only will the completion of this work ensure the safety of the public but is will also ensure that this iconic building is preserved for the benefit of enjoyment of future generations," he concluded, noting that the building's facelift has maintained the historic integrity of the building, reinforcing the library’s important past whilst providing a welcoming environment for both customers and tourists.
