John's Square, one of Limerick's most historic areas, is set to be upgraded.
According to the city council the area, built around 1750, will receive a €10m renewal.
Work consists of repaving the square in granite sets, new lighting, and street furniture.
A one-way traffic flow from Garryowen to the city centre will be introduced.
Wills Brothers Limited have been awarded the Civil Engineering Contractor.
Fifty per cent of the funding has been provided by the EU’s European regional development fund.
The work is due for completion in five months.
