Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government has officially opened the extension to Clanmorrin House, Boreenmanna Road, Cork which provides 24-hour support residential accommodation and care for people who are unable or who choose not to live independently.

The extension to Clanmorrin house will create three more high support places for those transferring from long term emergency accommodation in addition to the eight places already in situ.

Welcoming the opening of the new extension for which the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government provided €311,663 under the Capital Assistance Scheme the Minister said: "Every person delivered out of homelessness into accommodation such as this is testament to the hard work and commitment of the organisations working up and down the country in the homeless sector to ensure housing, protection and support for some of the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society."

The Minister also outlined the future shape and direction for the delivery of services for people experiencing homelessness and signalled the Government's determination to tackle homelessness in a more planned and strategic way, by adopting a housing led approach and providing long term solutions rather than just managing homelessness.

Minister Hogan stated that an emphasis away from the current over reliance on emergency accommodation provision to a more permanent accommodation solution was now required.
