Derry Road Upgrade To Aid Cross-border Trade

Formal consultation has just begun on part of a road scheme that will boost both Northern Ireland and border counties of the Irish Republic.

Helping to ease traffic along part of the heavily used main road from Belfast to the border city of Derry, the proposed highway dualling will reduce journey times and boost cross-border links with Co Donegal.

The Stormont Regional Development Minister, Danny Kennedy has launched the formal consultation phase for the new A6 dual carriageway, between Londonderry and Dungiven.

The launch comes with the publication of the draft Statutory Orders and Environmental Statement and marks the beginning of the process that will see Caw Roundabout in Londonderry linked to the eastern side of Dungiven, with 30kms of dual carriageway.

Danny Kennedy said: "This strategically important road scheme will bring with it improved road safety and reduced journey times. It will benefit private and commercial traffic with added benefits for the business community in the North West.

"The upgrading of this significant section of the North Western Key Transport Corridor will also deliver a much needed bypass for Dungiven with major environmental benefits for local residents.

"It will benefit the wider North West by delivering a direct and substantial increase in productivity. Improved infrastructure will enable ease of travel, improved quality of life, increase in choices for local communities, decrease in congestion and will enhance and encourage economic growth," he said.

"I would encourage people to attend the public exhibitions and to take the opportunity to find out more about the benefits of the scheme. Based on the nature and level of response a Public Inquiry may be held in 2012."

Representatives from Roads Service along with its engineering and environmental consultants will host local exhibitions where they will explain the detail of the proposals and be available to discuss the draft plans.
