Construction Workers Miss Out On Cork Expo

A Cork jobs expo has cancelled ticket sales after demand outstrips supply, preventing hopeful construction workers from securing work abroad, according to The Irish Examiner.

The Working Abroad Expo has announced they have had to cancel online ticket sales after receiving unprecedented demand for the event.

Responding to criticism that the Dublin exhibition had been out of control, Exhibition Director, Stephen McLarnon, said the unprecedented turn out at Dublin’s RDS was because many people had mistaken the British Columbia Construction Association, who were offering 300,000 construction jobs, and the Working Abroad Expo as one and the same event. They experienced queues so long that gates were closed at 2.25pm to prevent any further admissions.

"The British Columbia region had a stand and a few people from the British Columbia construction association were on the stand. We didn’t know they were coming, they were only one of the participants so we hadn’t anticipated the huge numbers."

The Cork exhibition, which aims to help people secure jobs abroad, made the decision to cancel advertising and stop online tickets in light of the Dublin event.

For those who can gain entry, the expo promises a vast array of job opportunities in Australia and Canada, featuring 50 companies recruiting for jobs across all disciplines, including healthcare, construction and farming sectors.

Mr McLarnon said he would strongly advise anyone attending the event to look on their website and come to the event only if their is something that you are interested in.

Over 800 tickets have already been pre-booked online and the organisers are looking into extending the opening hours.

The exhibition takes place tomorrow at the Sliver Springs Hotel, Cork, from 12pm to 7pm.
