Energy Ireland are to host the Future of Natural Gas Seminar at the Ballymascanlon Hotel in Dundalk.
The half-day seminar welcomes attendance by any organisation or individual and will feature speakers from the Energy Institute and Friends of the Earth providing their unique perspectives and views on the future of gas in Ireland.
Energy Ireland noted: "It is an interesting time for the gas, and broader energy sectors in Ireland, with a number of important developments underway. Several key projects are in the development phase, including both gas storage and LNG facilities which will have an impact on gas security of supply."
Conference Director, Owen McQuade said: "There can be no doubt that gas plays a vital role in meeting Ireland's energy needs with natural gas consumption increasing by 9.2% in 2010 to account for 32% of overall energy supply and 61% of electricity generation. Indeed for many years the move towards gas has been welcomed as being more efficient and environmentally friendly than the fuels it has been replacing such as coal and heavy fuel oil."
In support of this, Bord Gáis Networks has outlined plans to work towards the development of a natural gas vehicle market in Ireland, which would provide an alternative transport fuel with reduced emissions.
Australian company Tamboran Resources has confirmed a significant natural gas find in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh, claiming enough to ensure the security of gas supply to the Republic for the next 40 years and to Northern Ireland for 50 years.
The seminar will examine the key issues around the future of Ireland's gas market, both from a supply and demand perspective, by way of an expert panel of local and visiting speakers.
