Fine Gael Cork East TD, Tom Barry, has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, that a new primary school will be opened in Mallow next year. The new school will be run under the patronage of Cork County VEC.
"It's great news for prospective pupils and parents alike that a new primary school will be established in Mallow next year, under the patronage of Cork County VEC. Student numbers have increased in recent years in primary schools across Cork East. This new school in Mallow will help to alleviate any pressures within the system and cater for new pupils taking their first steps into education.
"Minister Quinn announced last year that Mallow would be one of twenty locations to receive a new school by 2015. I’m delighted that this process is not being delayed, and that the new school for Mallow will be opened next year.
"This represents a departure in the way that patronage is being decided upon in schools across the country. I welcome the fact that parents are being given more choice as they make extremely important decisions about the education of their children."
