A Newtownards skip company owner was fined £20,000 at Ards Magistrates Court today for operating an unlicensed waste transfer station.
A waste transfer station acts as a collection point for individual collections of waste, where the waste is sorted and bulked up before being moved or transported for further recycling or landfill.
Mr Adrian Griffiths (63), trading as Scrabo Skips, from Bangor Road, Newtownards, was fined for running the waste transfer station at the rear of 239 Bangor Road, Newtownards.
In July and September 2010, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency visited the site and discovered that it was being used, without the necessary waste management licence. to store and treat scrap metal, waste wood, green waste and construction and demolition waste, including concrete, red bricks, stone and clay.
