Tourism Minister Arlene Foster, has attended the opening of an impressive tourism re-development scheme at Silent Valley, Newcastle.
The Silent Valley is one of the largest single areas of land within the Mournes Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the reservoir is recognised as one of Northern Ireland’s 'must see' visitor attractions.
Visitors can now look forward to enhanced tourist facilities including improved walks; an interactive display in the visitor centre; upgraded car parking and amenities; signage and public art.
Speaking at the official opening, Arlene Foster said: "It is clear to see why the Mountains of Mourne are internationally recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The unspoilt rural charm, breath-taking mountain scenery, forest parks and heather moorlands are an amazing asset and key components in supporting the tourism sector.
"The investment is a major commitment towards developing and supporting tourism along the Mourne Coastal Route. It is an important one for the local area as by enhancing our tourism offerings we can increase visitor numbers which in turn will bring added benefits to the local economy.
"The enhanced facilities in Silent Valley Mountain Park will not only improve the visitor experience for everyone, but it will also encourage tourists to stay longer and explore the nearby towns and villages."
The NITB Tourism Development Scheme contributed £230,971.50 towards the project and a further £230,971.50 was invested by the Southern Organisation for Action in Rural Areas (SOAR), through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s, Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 (NIRDP).
Welcoming the launch of the project, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill said: "The launch of this important project today clearly demonstrates how the Rural Development funding can make a real difference and enhance a beautiful area like the Mournes. Nestled as it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this investment in capital infrastructure will reap many benefits through increased visitors to the area, increased investment in local towns and villages and hopefully healthier people through relaxation and leisure."
The Minister also praised the efforts of all involved in bringing the project to fruition and thanked the staff from Southern Organisation for Action in Rural Areas (SOAR) for their hard work in managing it.
