The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has produced a free guide offering social landlords free advice on data sharing and tenancy fraud.
The CIH currently hosts the Making Best Use of Stock team, a five-strong team of expert advisers, funded by the Communities and Local Government department, who specialise in tackling tenancy fraud - which is estimated to cost the state £900m a year.
The guide, produced by the MBUS team, is a clear explanation of benefits of sharing data between housing providers and local authorities in order to detect tenancy fraud.
It offers good practice examples from across the sector and focusses on providers who are leading the way in data sharing.
David Clayton, head of the MBUS team at CIH, said: "Affordable housing is in desperately short supply in this country and yet we have this huge problem of tenancy fraud, which deprives thousands of families of suitable accommodation.
"We are here to help housing associations spot the people intent on abusing the social housing system and we know data sharing is a key way to address this problem."
