SDLP Derry City Councillor Jimmy Carr has expressed concern at the impact of major roadworks on the Racecourse Road on local businesses.
Cllr Carr said: "I work in one of the retail units along the affected stretch of road, which is now closed for ten days for major works.
"Business owners from around the area have been calling in with me to voice their frustration at the works, which will have a major impact on their ability to trade effectively.
"I recently called for rate relief for affected businesses and would continue to do so, though we recognise that even that will not adequately compensate for trade lost.
"However, what is most frustrating is that I have only counted about half a dozen workmen on this set of roadworks. Increasing the workforce would not only be a positive move at a time when people are crying out for work but would also allow this project to be completed much more swiftly to the benefit of local residents and businesspeople alike.
"I call on council officers and the Roads Service to work closely, swiftly and with a sense of urgency to rectify this problem as a matter of priority."
