Over 100 primary school children descended on Knockawarriga wind farm near Mountcollins, County Limerick, at the invitation of Bord Gáis Energy which was hosting an event to celebrate Global Wind Day.
Children from Mountcollins, Toornafulla, Dromtrasna and Meenkilly National Schools all took part in the initiative which saw them take a trip to the wind farm to learn about wind energy and get up close and personal with the impressive turbines they see every day. The kids got the chance to let their artistic sides bloom with the opportunity to paint one of the turbines and also participated in a colouring competitions and a quiz.
George Martin, Head of Asset Operations at Bord Gáis Energy said: "This is the second year we’ve participated in this community initiative and it's been a huge success. The children are fascinated with the turbines and it's really special to see their reactions when they realise the sheer size of them up close.
"Renewable energy is growing in importance every day and when these children reach adulthood, it will be crucial to power generation in Ireland. We would hope that by then, Ireland will be generating much of its own energy through renewable sources, mitigating its reliance on energy imports. It's important that children today are educated and gain an interest in energy at an early age."
