A Co Armagh farmer pleaded guilty and was fined £500 plus court costs at Craigavon Magistrates' Court.
Mr John Charles Weir,of Banbridge Road, Waringstown, Co Armagh was fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
On 9 August 2011, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected the Waringstown River upstream of the Milltown Sewage Pumping Station, observing it to be dark in colour and exhibiting the odour of farm effluent. Some 1,800 metres of waterway was affected. The material causing the pollution was found to be discharging from farm premises owned by Mr Weir.
A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
