Project 220 Apprentices Achieve NVQ Level 2

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry has congratulated participants who have achieved their NVQ Level 2 through participation in the Department’s Programme-Led Apprenticeship provision.

Project 220 takes its name from Springvale Learning’s purchase of a derelict house at 220 Springfield Road, Belfast. Due to placements in the construction industry being difficult to find for trainees, Springvale Learning devised the idea of purchasing a derelict house for the trainees to refurbish while gaining skills and real-time work experience while getting assessed on site to complete their NVQ qualifications. For the past year a total of over 70 construction skills learners have been restoring the 110 year old property to its former glory. They have also had training in how to become self employed within the construction industry and in property development.

Performing the official 'Turning the Key' ceremony, Dr Stephen Farry said: "It is heartening to see these young people achieving their National Vocational Qualifications, either as part of their Level 2 Apprenticeship Framework or as a progression qualification en route to higher qualifications in their chosen career."

Addressing students who participated in Project 220 the Minister continued: "I wish to applaud the Board of Directors and staff of Springvale Learning for this imaginative and unique initiative which has provided your students with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and experience in order to achieve their NVQs."
