Deputy Cowen commented: "It was tremendous to see a record 855 entries in this year's Tidy Towns competition.

"Securing the overall title of Ireland’s Tidiest Town is truly remarkable, especially when you consider the competition from all around the country and what Abbeyshrule was up against.

"To have so many entries from towns and villages throughout the country is a testimony to the dedication and hard work put in by everyone on the various committees.

"Despite the economic difficulties in the country, community spirit is alive and well and events like this bind a community together, it also gives the towns and villages a unity of purpose."
