SDLP Derry City Councillor Martin Reilly has welcomed the swift action by Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) who have restored the electricity supply to up to 1,000 homes affected by the power cut in the Waterside area of the city.

He said: "Unfortunately it looks like a contractor hit a cable at 8am which consequently affected hundreds of homes in the Waterside.

"I have spoken to the NIE emergency team who have informed me that all homes affected should have been reconnected by 10am.

"I therefore welcome the prompt action by NIE to restore supplies."
