According to the Party, the decision, by Minister Jan O Sullivan, to grant a foreshore licence for oil drilling in Dublin Bay is putting at risk a critical environmental and amenity resource for the city.
Green Party Spokesperson on Planning, Tom Kivlehan, said: "I am deeply disappointed with the decision and now call on the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore to use his influence at cabinet to set up a public inquiry into the proposed drilling so close to the Dublin shoreline. There is still time to have widespread public participation, as Providence Resources require further permissions from different governments departments before drilling commences.

"Dublin Bay is a resource for the one million people living in the capital but their views and fears are been ignored by this government. When entering Government Fine Gael and Labour promised a new form of politics and a reconnection with the people and I am now calling on them to fulfill that promise.
"The only other recourse left for the people of Dublin is to seek a judicial review in the High court. We will be consulting with people and groups who are concerned about this project to see what steps can be taken."
