Fine Gael Louth Deputy, Peter Fitzpatrick, has congratulated Pat Spillane on his appointment as the Chairman of the new Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) which has been announced by Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan.
Mr Fitpatrick said: "I have known Pat both on and off the field for many years now and am delighted that he has been chosen to head up what will be a crucial initiative in identifying the economic needs of rural Ireland.
"Pat has always been a winner, a man of principle and someone who gives 100 per cent to every undertaking. He has the passion, the drive and the energy to ensure the best outcome from a project such as this and I wish him every success in overseeing what will be a very important element of rural economic development.
"The new Commission will generate a jobs strategy for rural Ireland, where unemployment has hit hard. The public consultation process will be key to determining the most effective way to spend the funds we have and to ensuring that resources are maximised for our smaller towns and villages into the future.
"Minister Hogan has embarked on a significant reform agenda through his overhauling of local government, which will empower local authorities to drive economic development. Putting People First will see a new strategy being devised for economic development, with a specific director of services for economic development being created in many local authorities. Local and community development supports will also work more closely with local government for enhanced results."
