Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise Ó Muirí, has officially unveiled a sculpture entitled 'Inverted Oil Rig' at Fr. Collins Park, The Hole in the Wall Road, Belmayne, Balgriffin, Dublin.
Dublin City Council commissioned the sculpture from Artist, Alan Phelan and it was installed in the park in May 2011. Since then, local schoolchildren from St. Francis of Assisi Primary School, Belmayne have been involved in giving the piece a nickname. The successful nickname chosen by the Artist, was "dobby fin millen drill" (Nightmare on Duck Street).
The Lord Mayor said: "I am delighted to be here in Fr. Collins Park to officially unveil this sculpture. The rig is notionally returning oil to the ground and the piece therefore is a creative response to the alternative energy resource provided by the five wind turbines which dominate the promenade area of the park. I want to congratulate both the artist, Alan Phelan for his inspirational sculpture and the local children from St. Francis of Assisi Primary School for their involvement in its naming. It is a really cool piece of public art!" said the Lord Mayor.
