SDLP Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has welcomed a proposed reduction in planning fee for applications that are submitted after the five year expiry date of a previous planning approval.

The proposal was revealed by the Minister of the Environment in an Assembly written answer to a question from the Mid Ulster MLA.

Mr McGlone said: "Over recent years a number of my constituents have raised their concerns at having to pay the full fee when re-applying for planning approval after the five year expiry date.

"This has been an increasing problem due to delays in building projects caused by the worsening economic climate.

"Having raised this issue with the Environment Minister I welcome his response in the Assembly written answer.

"The proposed significant reduction in the fee for a renewal of a planning approval will remove another obstacle to the revival of building projects and give a much needed boost to the construction industry.

I look forward to the changes in the Planning Fees Regulations being introduced in the Assembly as soon as possible."
