Christmas is fast approaching and as we prepare to get festive and celebrate, South Dublin Count Council is asking everyone to think about the environment.
Every year each household generates a lot of extra of packaging waste over the Christmas period, an estimated 54kgs per household. So this Christmas South Dublin County Council is encouraging everyone to reduce and recycle their festive packaging.
The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Cathal King said: "Between now and Christmas we will buy roughly 32 million batteries (800 tonnes) this accounts for almost 40% of all batteries sold in Ireland every year. So if each of us brought back just one battery to the Civic Amenity or to the retailer when purchasing new ones 4 million batteries (100 tonnes) would be diverted from Ireland’s landfill! Now that’s a lot of batteries recycled through one simple action. We are always trying to encourage everyone to recycle in anyway they can, so I am delighted to see the Christmas decoration competition is being run again this year. I look forward to having a look at the results of this competition every year I am amazed by people's creativity with recyclable materials."
